YOUTH WORK - 2007
VALUABLES.
When we talk about Values we need to know what is really valuable. Last time we saw that the Word of God is Valuable. It ought to be one of our central “values.” And if we listen to the Bible, we’ll find another Value – the Lord Jesus. The Apostle Peter tells us he is precious. [1 Peter 2:7] And yet, the sad thing is that he’s regarded by most people as irrelevant to life. Anyone else, and every other religion is given far more honour than Jesus. His name is not only the song of the drunkards. It’s used as a common swear-word. But that’s not the way God sees it, or Christians should see it. There are at least three ways Jesus is precious and valuable.
Jesus is Valuable in Himself
First the Lord Jesus is Precious in Himself – altogether apart from his relationship with others, and what He’s able to do for us. For example, He’s Absolutely Unique. Today, we place a great emphasis on the individual - apart from their relationship with anyone else, and the work they do. But our Lord’s Individuality and Uniqueness goes way beyond ours. We share many things with the rest of humankind. So too, does our Lord. But He shares something we can never share – the very nature of God. There is no other Person in the Universe like Him. Truly God and truly Man – “two whole, perfect, and distinct natures, the Godhead and the manhood are inseparably joined together in one Person.”
And this uniqueness is a Permanent Uniqueness. He is still, and ever will be, God and Man in two distinct natures – forever. We should never cease to marvel at this - that the Eternal Son of God should take our nature into permanent union with Himself. We could understand if God humbled himself like this for a little while. But for our Lord to do it permanently – that’s an amazing thing. And he’s Exceptionally Unique. Every noble characteristic and virtue finds its perfect embodiment in our Lord. This is why the psalmist in Psalm 45 is so excited! He says that Jesus is “the most excellent of men, and your lips have been anointed with grace.”
Jesus is Valuable to God.
And this brings up another thing. Jesus is precious to God. Peter says, in 1 Peter 2:4, that Jesus is “the living Stone – rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him” – ie to God. And he’s precious to God just because He, as the Eternal Son of God, not only agreed to be the Child of Promise and the true Messianic King, but also came into the World and accomplished the great work of Redemption.
Time and time again in the Bible we hear God the Father expressing His pleasure in His Son and what He has done, or is about to do. We hear it at His Baptism. We hear it just before the Crucifixion. And we see it in His glorious resurrection from the dead, and his enthronement at the right hand of God. Because he faithfully and successfully completed the work He was given to do, he was given a name that’s above every other name. Our Lord’s Resurrection, Ascension and being Crowned Lord of all is the fullest demonstration of how precious Jesus is to God.
Jesus is Valuable to Believers.
This leads on to another thing – and that is that Jesus is Precious to Believers. Those who truly know, love and
serve God, also love the Lord Jesus. Why is Jesus precious to Christians? He’s Precious because He’s their Savior. He’s paid the penalty for all their sins. We celebrate the sacrifice of others who secured our freedom and our future. How much more is the Lord Jesus valued and esteemed by Christians because he’s secured their freedom and future at the most basic level of all!
He’s also Precious because He’s their Lord and King. Who could ask for a better king – a better leader – than the Lord Jesus. And then he’s Precious because He’s Our Constant Companion. He says, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”. He comes and dwells in our hearts and lives in us through the Holy Spirit whom He has given to Believers.
Jesus is Valuable to All
The Lord Jesus is [1] Precious in Himself; [2] Precious to God; and [3] Precious to Believers. The big question now is: Is He Precious to Us? He Ought to be!. If He’s Precious in Himself; Precious to God; and Precious to Those Who are on their Way to Heaven we ought to see to it that He’s also Precious to us.
Do you have a cat who loves your computer? I do! Almost every night Ben comes in and hops up on my desk. If I don’t take notice of him straight away he walks across the keyboard — and as you can imagine, the results are very interesting! [Now you know why some of the articles may be a bit strange at times!!]. Then he walks back again, turns around, lies down with his head on the keyboard, and begins to purr. Mission accomplished!
I always thought Ben was a bit odd until I found out that cats have a fascination with computers! A report appeared recently in ZNet [A computer site on the internet] saying that an Apple iBook owner suspected his cat had hacked into his password-protected notebook! It turned out he was right. His cat, which liked sleeping on his keyboard, managed to automatically bypass the computer's security and change his settings and file names -- and even the name of his hard drive! He was some smart cat.
I don’t think Ben is that bright—or devious! I think he just wants a little bit of attention, and get some warmth from the Computer fan! And I guess that’s what’s we all want too — a little bit of attention, and love. The sad thing is that sometimes, [like Ben walking across the keyboard and messing up my writing!] we do some strange things to get them.
But we don’t have to do strange things to be noticed. God knows about us, cares about us, and has already shown us the warmth of his Love in the gift of his Son to be our Saviour. All we need to do is recognize it, believe it, and live in the light of it.
The sad fact is that we seek attention and love elsewhere and not from God who gives us every good and perfect gift.
God said to his people in the days of Isaiah: "The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” [Isaiah 1:3] At least Ben knows where he’ll get the attention and warmth he wants!
